Hippie
Overview
Hippie is Dama’s 1970 reworking of Bally’s 1966 Capersville, one of the Milan firm’s Electromechanical pinball conversion kits. The donor was an unlikely candidate for flower-power artwork: Capersville was a Cold War Spy Adventure caper, designed by Ted Zale and illustrated by Jerry Kelley, and it outsold every other Bally table of its decade.[1] It was a landmark of the form as well as a hit — the first game to offer three-ball multiball play[2] — and an early showcase for Bally’s zipper flippers, which could snap together to close the gap between them and keep the ball alive.[3] Onto that mechanism Dama grafted an entirely new subject, swapping espionage for the Flower Power counterculture of its own moment.
